π° In todayβs newsletter, I wanted to share my thoughts on whether AI will eventually replace software engineers, which is one of the hottest topics in the computer software industry. My answer is both yes and no. π«¨
π€ While AI has the potential to eventually replace software engineers, do I believe itβll happen in the next 10 to 20 years? Nah. π
π± I must say, I'm impressed with ChatGPT's abilities, although I don't believe it poses a threat to my job security at this point. π¨ While ChatGPT can write and debug computer programs, itβs still far from being able to write highly sophisticated and complex apps that are readily distributed in the market. π
π¦Ύ It is important to note that ChatGPT is an AI assistant designed to assist humans rather than replace them. Although it can help with generating boilerplate code, writing test cases, and finding information online, it's not capable of creating software products that companies rely on to serve their core business. π
π This applies to all industries, as ChatGPT is only capable of assisting with non-critical tasks that are not core to the business. οΈβοΈ
βοΈ Consider, for instance, ChatGPT's ability to write a movie script or compose music for my videos. Can we expect Hollywood to produce a film based on the script? ποΈ Can ChatGPT replace legendary composers such as John Williams and Hans Zimmer? πΌ While it can aid in finishing a coding assignment, is it reliable enough for companies to entrust it with creating their customer-facing software products entirely? π± The answer to all these questions is no. π To provide a more practical example, some experts, including myself, believe that Microsoft's Copilot, an AI assistant that helps Office users in creating documents and presentations, may eventually replace interns. However, no one, including myself, expects it to take over business-critical positions that support a company's primary operations. ποΈ
βοΈ In short, AI technology is not yet advanced enough to replace the expertise, sophistication, and experience that professionals have worked years to master. πͺ
π Despite its impressive capabilities, itβs not yet advanced enough to make software engineering obsolete, either. As I have mentioned in a previous newsletter, technological advancements are actually increasing the demand for specialized software engineers, creating more sophisticated roles. β¬οΈ So, if you're interested in coding, don't let the advent of AI discourage you.
