In this newsletter, I wanted to share how side hustling can benefit your career and not just your wallet. As someone who is a full-time software engineer, part-time YouTuber, and a side hustler, Iβve experienced firsthand how the side gigs can accelerate my main career in unexpected ways. π€©
My journey as a side hustler began when I started teaching math as a private tutor after graduating from high school. Later, I taught computer science and LeetCode after graduating from college. After working as a software engineer for a few years, I began coaching job seekers to help them land jobs in big tech. π§βπ«
Initially, I thought the only advantage of having side hustles was having additional sources of income. But I soon realized that side hustles offered more than just financial benefits extending into my full-time job! Here are a few ways that side hustling has enhanced my career:
πͺ Improving my skills: Teaching computer science as a private tutor forced me to revisit and expand my knowledge of the subject. This not only improved my teaching skills but also helped me apply concepts that I had forgotten in my full-time job.
π Making job transitions easier: Teaching LeetCode for my private lessons forced me to solve coding problems daily, putting me into a routine that I wouldnβt have done otherwise. This practice made preparing for coding interviews easier when I decided to leave my job at Microsoft.
πΈ Earning higher compensation: In the tech industry, itβs often more beneficial to switch companies to increase your salary and total compensation. Staying at one company for too long can limit your salary growth. Side hustling helped me build my skills and gain experience that made me more attractive to potential employers, resulting in higher offers.
Although there are drawbacks to side hustling, such as less personal time, considering a side gig related to your current job may be a fun and rewarding way to make better use of your time and accelerate your career. Additionally, you have control over how much time you put into it, and you can experiment with finding the right balance! π§ͺ
